When deciding how to arrange your closet, evaluate the clothes you’re keeping and put them in catagories such as: hanging items, drawers, shoes, misc drawers, etc. Some things that you’ve been folding should probably be hung up, and some hanging items probably are on the wrong hanger type and are getting excess wrinkles just from bad hangers. Consider all those aspects and make the necessary shifts in your clothes so you can put them where they really belong. Its your chance to start fresh.

Admit it, you are hording piles of clothes you don’t wear and probably never will. Don’t spend money organizing things you won’t wear, get rid of it. Here’s the plan: after six months, see which clothes still have tags or stickers and re-evaluate them for eBay, consignment or donation. You haven’t worn the clothes in half a year! Your summer clothes go straight into the back of the closet so that everything you?re wearing right now is easy to grab. You can also divide the closet in half, with your weekend grubbies on one side and your work and dressy clothes on the other. The “keep” pile should not consist of clothing that is simply wearable, but clothing that makes you look your best. If you haven’t worn an item in six months, donate or dump accordingly.

When we helped move them in I was given specific instructions about how to hang them. If I couldn’t do it right, don’t bother doing it at all. Knowing the guy, it makes sense, but I can’t imagine being quite that meticulous about it. I’m happy if I get the clothes washed and folded before the week starts.

If you don’t care about coordinating the look of your storage space, you have a lot more options for types of storage. Plastic tubs, rolling bins, and canvas totes are just . That’s because in smaller spaces, every inch of closet space must be maximized, and in larger spaces closets require more careful planning since most of us have many more items to store. Closets used to be built without paying too much attention to individual needs so most closets were simply a few shelves and maybe a hanging rod or two. Despite a built-in look, the fully customizable components are value-priced so that a standard eight-foot closet can be converted to a full-storage space for as little as $300.

Need help? When closet designers plan your new closet space, they not only find more storage space for you, they make sure to display your belongings attractively. This way your favorite garments are at your fingertips, ready to wear.

Over-the-door shoe hangers can hold dozens of pairs and make use of under-utilized space. Flexible shoe containers made of canvas or plastic with attached hangers allow you to hang your shoes vertically and are great for narrow closets with little floor space. Items such as ties and belts can be hung on special hangers and hung to the sides of the closet. If you don’t want your shoes piling up on the closet floor, shoe racks or closet door shoe bags should be installed.

Closet systems are known for 2 things: being very cool and very expensive. There are ways around the high cost factor, the easiest of which is to buy things in pieces. Instead of getting everything at once, buy just a couple of the units and add to them as you need. This can be easier on the wallet and you may find that your original plan didn’t quite meet your needs and you’ll still have the flexibility to get something else instead. Like drawers instead of another hanging rack, etc.
